Who Wants to Be An American?

an article in the newspaper contends that working in a call center is a potential health hazzard. the assumption is that screwing the work cycle has a direct impact on your state of wellbeing. a different study came out that potentially debunks this assumption and lays out the REAL cause of hypertension and other stress related disorder: 1. The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans. 2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans. 3. The Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans. 4. The Italians drink a lot of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans. 5. The Germans drink a lot of beers and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans. CONCLUSION Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you . aylabet! thanks Annabelle, this made me laugh ha ha ha!!!!

Breaded Battered Buttered Friends

this post is dedicated to my friends who had their hearts broken by those they considered to be their closest friend. you know who you are. and for those that did the breaking, YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE . you should have learned your lesson from janice de belen when she admitted to the world that she is pregnant with aga mulach's son: "God Was With Us". yup, you should have realized that someone was watching YOU. i have your details as a full fledged member of CWL. i am not referring to the the Christian Women's League but to Chismis 'Way Limit . excerpt from the song: Never, saw it coming All of, your backstabbing Just so, you could cash in On a good thing before I realized your game I heard, you're going around Playing, the victim now But don't, even begin Feeling I'm the one to blame 'Cause you dug your own grave, uh huh Lyrics: F i g h t e r Christina Aguilera When I, thought I knew you Thinking, that you were true I guess I, I couldn't trust ...

The Scariest Pit Bull

Image
pit bulls are cute dogs! dropped by SM Cebu to watch a dog show for pit bulls and got some snaps of the lil' monsters. the handler, feeding his baby. didn't bother publishing the picture where the handler takes a swig of the water AFTER the dog. winky, the winking pit bull. i have got to shave, even dogs are coming on to me. the scariest pit bull. confidently walking around the other pit bulls. btw, if you haven't noticed. the bleached hair, pot bellied, beer chugging man has a shiny shoulder bag tucked underneath his sweaty armpits.

Peekture Perpek!

Di Tsang - Great Vows Fo Guang Shan Chu Un Temple, Cebu 3rd Place, Photo Contest the greatest joy come from the least expectation. i wasn't really expecting anything. so it was a bit embarrassing to come up and accept an award specially when i was wearing an old red polo with a tear along the shoulder. must have reinforced the grungy artiste look. the more interesting news is that my entry is totally last minute as it was just an invitation to watch the dress rehearsal for Siddharta in the temple grounds. the fates must have had a hand in the whole affair as it was purely luck that i saw the shrine on my way out. like a moth, i got drawn to the golden glow of the shrine.

Food Trip! - Cafe Metro

Image
imagine succulent chicken nuggets with bits of skin fried to crackling crispiness while keeping the meat tender, tossed with talong (eggplant) strips and smothered in a sweet tangy teriyaki sauce. on the side i have a huge portion of boneless bangus (milkfish) belly, seasoned with salt and pepper then quickly pan fried (skin down) on one side to keep the belly juicy and fat. top this with an ensalada of green sour mango, sweet white onions and red red tomato cubes. go ahead, imagine your teeth sinking into the soft flesh and the explosion of flavor that fills your mouth. a cup of white, steaming sticky rice perfectly compliments the food. an order of dalandan (orange) slush helps you clear your taste buds for another succulent bite. aya-yay ! if you're anything like me, i'd be heading off to cafe metro in the mega strip (ortigas) or hit their outlet in greenbelt 3(?), r ecipes by metro . i admit, i am a gastronomic maniac (imagine strains of the flashdance theme song, maniac ...

Food Trip! - Kul's Kitchen

Image
Filipinos Love Food. This is the only country where we have snacks in between snacks. My friends who end up in Cebu always ask: "Where can we find good food?" flashback about two years ago, still working as a vampire in a call center. i usually head off to IT park for lunch around 12 midnight (and no, i don't go hunting for young pretty things to bite). a newly opened restaurant caught my eye as i originally thought that Sunburst finally opened up a branch in asiatown. who can blame me, the logos look the same. Kul's Kitchen just opened and there was hardly any people coming in. The hardest part of choosing a restaurant is that you despise going into a full packed restaurant but you also hesitate to go into one that's almost "empty". i decided to take a gamble and am glad i made that choice. the word Kul is a literal translation of the Hindi word that means "Home". That makes the restaurant serve home-cooked meals, just about the description ev...

Food Trip! - Casa Verde

Image
Filipinos Love Food. This is the only country where we have snacks in between snacks. My friends who end up in Cebu always ask: "Where can we find good food?" if you're like me who haven't evolved that far from our cavemen ancestors, you probably have a liking for meat. genormously huge baby back ribs with meat literally falling off the bone, slathered with sweet and peppery tamarind infused barbecue sauce and served with bits of vegetables and garlic rice on top of hotsa-hot sizzling plate is probably your choice of hunt. if this describes your facebook / multiply / friendster profile then pick up your club and head off to Casa Verde along V. Ranudo Extension (details at the end of the post). This place is probably one of the worst kept secret of Cebu and if you haven't heard of this place, then, you, truly, are, clueless. Miss it and you actually save half your life as the extremely rich food in Verde is decidedly part of my artery-clogging list. Equally sumpt...

Have A Cow!

Image
i gotta admit that Brian Gorrell's blog is still as fascinating as ever. One of the posts though got my attention - not because of the shocking revelations about anyone. Obviously copied from this link :) i just noticed that the cow is really faaaat with skin that is literally bursting at the seams. unlike our philippine cow that has loose thick skin hanging around the neck. just like some cows i know with loose, thick, really thick faces... errr skin.

Ksitigarbha

Image
if you're reading this then you're probably a buddhist who is familiar with the story of the King Of Vows. that or you probably thought am coming up with another chic new word. Dizang, Jizō and Địa Tạng are some of the other names attributed to Ksitigarbha as a Mahayana Buddhist Bodhisattva that has made a vow not to attain Buddhahood until all hells are emptied. This is very similar to Christian precepts of great sacrifice for the salvation of mankind. or in the case of Mahayana Buddhism, all sentient beings. I was able to get some pictures of the shrine dedicated to Di Tsang in the Chu Un Temple in Cebu City. I just loved the play of light. Enjoy! Di Tsang King of Vows Chu Un Temple, Cebu City Interesting play of light, the busted one on the left may refer to hell whereas the one on the right is nirvana. how appropriate. Old Pictures

Image
the latest issue of Digital Photographer Philippines (is. 19) is out and have been happily reading through it. the imaging tutorial on pin hole cameras got my fancy as it allowed me to convert a picture to a "vintage" version. Old House, Dalaguete St. Catherine of Alexandria Church, Carcar am pretty sure my friends don't want me to convert ANY of their portraits to this format ha ha ha ha. An older picture of me. Literally.

Whose Your Momma Now?!

Budyok's about ten months old by now and he's already starting to mimic words and expressions. Here is Mama Inday teaching Budyok how to say MAMA. Now, Whose Your Momma Now?!

The Ant and the Contact Lens

Image
got this one from a dear friend and wanted to share this one, though i can not verify the claim whether this is true story, the message is well written :) if you like it, share it with your friends who need a little bit of inspiration. Cheerios! ----------- Brenda was almost halfway to the top of the tremendous granite cliff. She was standing on a ledge where she was taking a breather during this, her first rock climb. As she rested there, the safety rope snapped against her eye and knocked out her contact lens . 'Great', she thought. 'Here I am on a rock ledge, hundreds of feet from the bottom and hundreds of feet to the top of this cliff, and now my sight is blurry.' She looked and looked, hoping that somehow it had landed on the ledge. But it just wasn't there. She felt the panic rising in her, so she began praying. She prayed for calm, and she prayed that she may find her contact lens. When she got to the top, a friend examined her eye and her clothing for the l...

Happily Losing

Image
...weight that is. the other day i recommended that tessie have her eyes checked, she is THAT certain that i lost weight. that of course was a joke, but it made me smile. the never ending battle of getting some baby fat, err okay, some adult fat is obviously working. the automatic assumption is that i've done drastic changes to my food foraging habits e.g. steamed tasteless disgusting chicken breasts, paper mush flavored tuna packed in water and tons of gas inducing camote (sweet potato tubers). it comes as a big surprise that i tell them that lechon kawali (crispy succulent deep friend pork cutlets) is a staple lunch hunt for me. or greasy fat dripping sweet humba on top of steaming hot rice. on the other hand, it SHOULDN'T be a surprise to know that moderation is the only thing that works when it comes to battling the bulging bulge. yesterday i absolutely refused an invitation by tonette to drop by alejandro's near Cebu Doctors for the artery plug called Crispy Pata (te...

Unchristian Catholics

this is not the first or the last time that the Church is meddling in politics. categorically, i agree with the recommendation for a no-pardon for the coup plotters - let them burn in the earthly hell of bilibid. the only thing i find distastefully sick is that the Church recommended a no-pardon situation (despite the basic tenets of the faith!) for these rogues whereas they literally cast their lots with the pardon of Erap. the coup plotters, no matter how twisted their means, were fighting for a cause they believed in. if remorse and forgiveness is a measure, they deserve the pardon more than Erap. Erap had no remorse, no cause nor reason. quoted article: Church says don't pardon convicted Philippines plotters AFP, MSN Roman Catholic bishops in the Philippines warned President Gloria Arroyo on Monday against granting a pardon to nine military officers convicted of mounting a failed coup five years ago. The defence establishment on Sunday urged Arroyo to grant presidential clemenc...

Tasteless Preview

Image
"there is something horrendously grotesque about the image that makes it a genius". except that "genius" got taken out in the case of the latest preview magazine cover. someone should get fired in the graphics / editing department of preview. the magazine is obviously "sponsored" by Pantene who is launching its newest image models with their definition of Manila's Loveliest. I wonder whose definition of "lovely" they are using. cadaverous lovelies i must say. under ordinary circumstances, the ladies should have been gorgeous enough with minimal need of the digital scalpel. and those lips, those puckered up lips that belong to a life vest straining at the hilt with collagen err, oxygen. or should i say photoshop liquify tool? i wonder which ad agency worked on this campaign - judy ann and claudine are relatively still "in" whereas gretchen and ruffa are definitely "out", as in somewhere OUT there. i must say though that th...

Surot Surot Sa Sugbu: Dalaguete - Picture Slides

Surot Surot Sa Sugbu: Dalaguete

It was a bit unexpected, but it was a welcome event when i got invited to join the summer outing of Nits and Fred together with the kids and some other family barkada to Dalaguete (pronounced with the last "e" as silent compared to Dumaguete). At the back of my head, i was wondering what's interesting about Dalaguete as it looks like any small roadside town south of Cebu. 7:30AM we all met up in Ramos St. Cebu City. As usual, Ron's running a bit late and Joy went ahead. From there we went on a "caravan" to head off to Ocean Bay Resort. 8:30AM had to make a MANDATORY stop in Carcar, kids wanted some Jollibee by the rotonda and i grabbed some Chicharon from Tito's. 10:00AM arrived in Ocean Bay Resort, Dalaguete. I think i drove too fast but i've always LOVED the southern coastal road. the views are just fantastic specially when you get to hilly roads along the coastline with amazing views of the bay. the strips of white hint at the white sand the area ...

Bangungot and Lucky Me

Disclaimer: The following message was forwarded by a friend. I have no patience for spelling or grammar correction so i simply pasted it as it is. Anything in italicized red is a comment from me. Got this information from a US-based pharmacist who is a cousin of a colleague. It seems only MALES are afflicted with this. We had a co-staff/driver from FAO who died last month from supposedly BANGUNGOT-- leaving a housewife and 3 very young kids. IMPORTANT: Never go thirsty when going to bed and be sure you have plenty of water during your 8-hour rest. Bangungot has killed a male nurse of UERMMH. It is sudden death in adults which cause them to die while sleeping. Many theories have been put forward as its cause. However, here is an article which sheds some light to the cause of this malady. Please read on: Article from THE PHILIPPINE STAR: (the subject of an intense critique from brian gorrell of the gucci gang scandal and is purpotedy facing credibility issues due to some interesting pra...

Walang Simalaaaaa...

Image
of course i am purposely "misquoting" the famous line delivered by nora aunor in the LA County Jail after her incarceration for drug possession. err i meant the movie "Himala". Regardless whether you believe in miracles or not, Simala (Barangay Lindogan, Sibonga Cebu) is getting foot traffic from pilgrims that wish to visit the miraculous shrine of Mama Mary. shrine is not probably the best way to describe the place as it has grown from a mere payag (nipa hut) originally built by the Marian Monks to a massive castle-like structure on top of a hill that overlooks the bay and hills. and based on the master plan, the existing edifice is just part of an intricate complex that is currently being developed. town lore tells of a Penitential Rosary Walk (1998) for the intercession of Mama Mary to halt a devastating plague that claimed lives of children and infants in Lindogan. to honor Her powerful intercession, they gave a plot of land to the Marian Monks to establish a sh...

The Grudge Match

Image
The Grudge Match 2nd Friendship Amateur Boxing Match May 4, 2008 Paseo Verde Czar Amonsot AJ Banal Rey Bautista Z Gorres ALA claim to be home of the Cebuano Boxing Champions. With world-class brawlers such as Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista, AJ Banal, Z Gorres and Czar Amonsot you know that it is not an idle claim. You probably won't be picking any fight with this bunch even if you are backed up by the combined forces of the bloods or crips gang. ALA is THAT scary. When Holiday Gym & Spa (HGS) agreed to an invitational match last year (2007) versus ALA i was muttering to myself - oh well, they're probably tired of their boy band faces. Admittedly, the client-fighters of HGS illicit more squeals not because of their fighting skills but because the girls in the gym find them hunky chunky tasty and firm to the bite. like that hotdog brand, purefoods. but like what dear old murphy said: if something can fuck up, bet you it really is going to screw up. and yes, HGS screwe...

Surot Surot sa Sugbu : Carcar

Image
Carcar is bad for the HEART . It is home to the heart-stopping, artery busting chicharon (pork rind) that is cooked to a crackling crisp with a thick layer of fat dipped in pinakurat (fermented vinegar with exotic spices) that melts in your mouth and goes directly to your hips or tummy. we groan and complain that fat always deposits itself on the most inconvenient space (gathering above the belt line of tightening pants or cramming itself on our cheekbones) but we continue to pop another piece of this devilishly scrumptious delicacy. add jollibee to chicharon and you would have the basic answer of a typical cebuano when they are asked about Carcar. i don't think it is purely chance that jollibee is situated right at the bustling town rotonda and a hop right across Luis' Chicharon . Insider tip: if you're cute and nice enough, you can pick and pack your own chicharon pieces - don't forget to get chummy with the tindera . interestingly, Carcar is one of the newest city o...
