the erap comedy show (draft)
i don't watch telenovelas on local television because of the irritating habit of exteeeeeending a single scene that could have been done with a couple of lines. that is exactly what i was banking on as i lugged my popcorn, potato chips, a jug of juice and tocilog breakfast in front of my tv to watch court case 26558, otherwise known as the erap comedy show.
i barely bit into the greasy fried egg when erap's minions petitioned the court of leonardo-de castro, villaruz and peralta to skip to the end of the document and just read the verdict.
guilty of plunder and not guilty of perjury.
i can understand the not guilty clause on perjury (lying under oath) - jinggoy would have us believe that we were brainwashed to think that erap talks through his asshole and is barely lucid between bouts of drinking that he sometimes doesn't know what he's talking about. well... i know for a fact that the janitor in malacanang earns an extra php 200 a day selling empty bottles sold for P15 a kilo. bottom line is, we know he's a liar so it doesn't matter whether he is judged guilty of perjury.
on the other hand, guilty of plunder leaves a bad taste in my mouth. i grab my juice and gulped a mouthful of ponkanang inang.
before you get me wrong, i previously wrote about a call for all filipinos to rally behind the cause to convict estrada. i certainly feel that way then and still feel the same way now.
i feel that an injustice was done to the filipino people when they deprived us of hearing the detailed decision and reading of the court decision on erap leading up to his conviction of guilt. the minions know that erap is going to get convicted and they don't want the filipino people to understand the rationale, reasoning and facts that led leonardo-de castro (et al.) to come to that conclusion.
what do they hope to achieve? they want erap to be perceived as a martyr, that a great injustice was committed before the millions of filipinos watching the proceedings. the piece of fried egg fell from my mouth as i was left open-mouthed with dismay, listening to saguisag pronounce that erap does not want to be granted any special favors. for a moment, i wished that the court acceded to his theatrics and sentenced him to a rat-infested, overcrowded cell in muntinlupa instead of allowing him to stay in his house in tanay. poor erap indeed.
brava! with a masterful stroke, they made erap look like a tortured hero (even though the camera are barred from showing any of the accused) and set the stage for media pronouncements that will cast doubt on the court.
skipping the details leaves the decision open for speculation and the minions can sow doubt about the court's authority. jinggoy was reported happy that he was acquitted with his plunder case but believes that erap's conviction will have ramifications in the very-near future. To quote jinggoy:
"With due respect to our magistrates, I am deeply convinced that our case was decided not on the basis of merits, not on evidence, and certainly not on the canons of law and established jurisprudence, but to justify the unconstitutional and forcible removal of a sitting president duly elected by our people and give the highest majority in the history of presidential elections in our country."
that wasn't really respectful to the magistrates, and for him to claim that the decision has been decided months before, he certainly had this "speech" prepared beforehand. only an idiot will believe that jinggoy can come up with such an eloquent statement. if i can somehow hear his eloquence in senate on more pressing matters and issues that face the nation i'd have believed this showbiz churva. i should probably say kudos to saguisag for preparing this speech.
yeah right.
the local news channels panned through the crowd that was supposedly showing their support for erap. what a pitiful group, the number of people gathered was less than a third-class town miting-de-avance running for councilor. in short, walang budget (no budget). we can only speculate that the funds got used up in the recent national elections - money that was spent on buying votes - o wait, they don't call it that way - snacks+travel allowances.
i consulted madam auring and she has this to say:
madilim ang hinaharap nating pilipino, nagdidilim na paningin ko dahil gutom na ko. (the future is dim for the filipino, my sight is getting darker because of hunger...) at tulad ng hello garci escandal na yan, mag mumulto pa ulit si erap (and just like the hello garci scandal, erap will come back to haunt us).
just like an exteeeeeended scene in a telenovela show.

for those inclined, i searched far, deep and wide for the sandiganbayan ruling on erap and i have a pdf file of the 179 page document. email me at dennis.tagamolila@gmail.com and i'd be more than happy to send you a copy. it certainly makes for an interesting read with all the cast of characters in this seriously funny teletubbyvela.
