another day the phiippines stood still

Image
as i'm writing this, manny pacquiao's name is beng called to head up the ring in MGM Garden Grand Arena to face Mosley in front of thousands of spectators that paid a small fortune to see it in the flesh and hundreds of thousands more (if not millions) that paid anything in between fifty pesos to six hundred pesos (snacks included) for a live telecast in every corner of the philippines where they can set up a television. as usual, crime rates will literally drop to close to zero as all the thugs stream to venues to start betting on variants of the fight: knock out? pacquiao wins? which round? amidst all the shouting, screaming, fainting and cardiac arrest erupting in every corner, i am contentedly sitting in my favourite coffee shop that's practically devoid of customers as i wait for the results to come in. o how i wish i can see the new head and shoulder hair of manny swing to the left and right (if it doesn't get in the way of his vision) in an obvious beiber ins...

A Convert

Image
i've never really idolized manny pacquiao. i have seen him up close a couple of times, both of us were guests in a town fiesta. never mind that he's the honored guest and his bust was set up in front of the gym after the motorcade where people lined up the streets and chanted his name. it bears noting that his father comes from pinamungahan in cebu, that explains the horde of pacquiao's that came down from the mountain barangays to meet their famous kinsman. i really don't care. my friends demanded that i take their pictures with the pacman, and this was before he won his sixth world title. it was a different story with pokwang though. i had to elbow, box, jab and shove people out of the way so i can grab a pose beside her. there must be a reason why i am not so "lady gaga" over the pacman. let's just say that familiarity does breed some form of contempt, specially when one hear (alleged?) stories about the pacman's activities outside the ring...

Wapakman

... is a reminder to manny that he sucks when he tries to act. and let's just be honest about it, ara mina and krista won't give him a second look if he didn't have his billions. then again, if his tongue is as hard as his fists then am sure it would make up for the looks department. matigas dila ni mani ano. bisaya kasi. kayo talaga bastos thoughts. unless they like the ER look. manual laborer, carpenter, fisher, police officer, government worker etc etc yada yada. in fairness, i was literally green with envy with his gorgeous abs. and yes, he takes off his clothes in a number of scene to show off his (drug-free) body. on another note, the role of ruffa mae as his wife who goes to italy and decides to marry an italian fellow was a bit convoluted. and she even gets to bring her kids with her to italy. why in heaven's name are we even showing that? the values are screwed up and it leaves a pretty nice (im)moral lesson: thank you white man for saving another filipina from...

Bloody Brawl

Image
i had a dream last night that manny pacquiao was bloody all over. a zombie out of a b-rated filipino movie hack. as it turned out, cotto got turned into minced meat. which reminds me, me kasabihan tayo na kung ang tao kino-cotto ang cotto hindi pwedeng tinatao. kung kaya when manny was asked why he thought he had the edge over cotto, he quickly replied "aba syempre sa hidden soldiers ano! di kaya ng kuto at kung ano pang garapata yan! and reminder to all my pans, tonayt is the nayt i make history. i am the only living legend. so let's go and celebrate christmas with ginebra san miguel an if you have hangout then relax, take alaxan and drink your magnolia milk first before sleeping." hmmmm. photo courtesy of Ryan Araneta

King Kong Wins an Oscar!

Image
de la Hoya was quoted a day before his fight that he's ready for King Kong. King Kong won an Oscar (pun intended) - so I guess he was predicting the outcome of his fight with Manny The King (Kong) who won in a thrilling match that saw Oscar throw in the towel at the 8th round. At the end of the day, Oscar is still the bigger winner: making millions out of the fight, heading the Golden Boy productions, movie star looks and a potential career as an international actor. On the other hand, even Manny won't make the King Kong production, even if he wears the monkey suit. Don't get me wrong, Manny rocks! if he can only train his fists on some hanger-ons in his entourage maybe he can achieve the business savvy that makes Oscar the bigger winner.

Show Me the Manny! - Another Paking Story

Image
i'm not a fan of manny pacquaio. he can stand beside me and i'd literally look past him. can't help the fact that he's very veeeery short and am part of the kapre clan. well, he does look like gimli in lord of the rings. remember the dwarf? anyways, paking raised a few eyebrows raise despite botox induced paralysis when he said he is from cebu after the fight with marquez. then again, there is some truth to paking's claim. sunday may 4, 2008. last day of pinamungajan town fiesta and people are buzzing and lining the streets to catch a glimpse of paking making his way to the town auditorium where he is scheduled to accept a shrine dedicated to him that traces his father's roots to guimbawian, a mountain baranggay, in this sleepy southwest town of cebu. then again, i am not a reporter and that's not MY story. earlier that day, paking was the honored guest of the mayor in her house where a sumptuous lunch feast was prepared for his visit. my friends kept buggi...

SweetsHart!

Manny Pacquiao: honey, buksan mo na yung sweets... Jinky: Nasaan honey? Ang lambing mo naman! may pa sweet sweets ka pa. Manny Pacquiao: Yung sweets ng elaw, dilim kaya!

Paking Unbelebabel!

Image
A wild roar erupted from the gym packed audience watching the slugfest (Unfinished Business - March 15) between paking (manny pacman's other nick) and marquez when the announcement came that the "pambansang endorser" este "kamao" (english: "nation's fist") won. It wasn't the sort of hooting thumpa thumpa chest paking rocks type of roar though. More like, a big big noisy noisy sigh of... relief. we love paking to death despite his choice of traveling companion (atienza et. al.) and his very brian gorrellisky type of shenanigans in Embassy accompanied by someone-definitely-not-his-wife. within minutes of the announcement, various news flash came out - the most interesting is the comment of nanay dionisia (paking mother) lamenting that she doesn't like paking's face to get all bloodied and cut. an unsolicited comment nanay - paking's never been a pretty face, wala na po syang ipapa-pangit pa. hala . on the other hand, we filipinos are ...
